7 reasons to love micro weddings

What is a micro wedding?

I think most people will be familiar by now with the term micro wedding after nearly two years of living through the covid pandemic. A micro wedding is essentially a small wedding, usually less than 50 people but this can be a small as 10. This is of course not a new idea but has certainly risen in popularity (and necessity) due to the restrictions placed on us during this pandemic.

Initially when restrictions were placed on us all and numbers were limited so severely at weddings to 15 or 30 people we all felt it was such a loss. Indeed this was quite a blow to those that had been planning their dream big wedding.

However, as the pandemic went on and I experienced a number of small weddings I realised there are actually a great number of advantages to this kind of intimate, personal wedding.

1. Only invite those that are really important to you

So often couples feel the pressure to invite everyone and anyone to their wedding. I am a firm believer in this being YOUR day and you should do it your way. Gone are the days when you HAVE to invite Aunt Mary that you never speak to. Having a micro wedding eliminates the awkwardness of not inviting all the family cousins and the next door neighbour.

2. Make your budget go further

We all know that getting married can get very expensive. The more guests you have, the further the budget has to stretch and either the quality will be compromised or you will have to cut back somewhere else. By having less people you can spend the money on things that are more important to you – perhaps that is your dream wedding venue or really going all out for your wedding photography (especially important if the photos are the main thing people will see if they weren’t there).

3. More flexibility on the day

There is much more room to be flexible with a smaller number of guests. When the wedding party is just your nearest and dearest, you can just totally be yourselves and celebrate in whatever way best suits you. Sophie & James took their whole wedding party (11 people) to the coastal town of Polperro for a pint in the Blue Peter pub and for a fish and chip dinner!

4. Less details to worry about

It can be very overwhelming when you first get engaged and realise just how much there is to plan and organise. Whilst some people revel in the joy of planning, not all do and it can become quite stressful. There are some fantastic wedding planners out there that definitely lighten the load (feel free to ask me for recommendations). However, if you don’t have the budget for that, by cutting numbers you instantly make things simpler. You can still have your dream wedding with all the details you care about, but on a smaller, more intimate scale.

5. More relaxed and less spotlight

Whilst some people love the spotlight and all the attention being on them for the day, others do not. I totally relate to this one, I am much more comfortable in a smaller group with a bunch of good friends than in a big group. Being with your very best friends and family, those you have hand picked to join you on this special day means you can really relax and be yourselves. You can actually talk to all your guests and have real conversations rather than a quick handshake with 200 people.

6. Splash out on suppliers

Having saved so much money on not buying dinner for 200 people you can afford to spend more on the things that are important to you. Perhaps that is indulging in the food, going for the venue of your dreams, or going all out for the photography. Make the most of your day and really indulge in celebrating it your way.

7. Focus on what really matters to you

A smaller wedding allows you to really focus on what is most important to you. You can easily personalise a smaller wedding and spend time doing things you couldn’t do at a big event. You can really spoil your wedding guests with deluxe personalised gifts and treats without having to batch make hundreds of standard things.

As a Cornwall wedding photographer I can highly recommend some lovely intimate wedding venues that are tailored for smaller weddings. Sophie & James were married at Frieda & MoonΒ – an exquisite tiny weddings and couples’ luxury escapes venue. Weddings are limited to a maximum of 12 people. Here’s what they say about the experience of getting married with them:

“Together… we can craft an β€œexquisite tiny wedding”, down to the tiniest detail, that is as individual as you are. Our speciality is to wrap you up in the glow of this unique haven, so that you can focus fully on the special meaning of your relationship on your day-of-all-days.

Every wedding at Frieda And The Moon, whether just the two of you or with a few guests β€” is, quite simply, one-of-a-kind.

We know that the magic comes from curating an exceptional experience that reflects your personal story and unique vision. Frieda And The Moon is a family business, so there are just the two of us looking after your planning and the wedding itself β€” it is all about the family feeling and the personal touch β€” small is beautiful!”

“We found Hannah when searching for photographers in Cornwall and are so grateful that we did. From the moment we sent her a message, Hannah was incredibly accommodating and responsive to any contact we made; even when needing to change the date of our wedding.
It was such a pleasure to have Hannah at our wedding and she definitely felt like one of the guests. We could not believe how quickly we got our photos back and they were sensational.
Hannah was even able to tempt a smile out of a cheeky, camera-shy 18 month old! Such a friendly, relaxed yet professional service – would 100% recommend Hannah and should we ever need a photographer again she is number 1 on our list.”

Sophie & James opted for my hourly wedding photography package as they didn’t need full day coverage. All of the photos in this blog were taken over a couple of hours – you would be amazed at how much I can cover in that time. This included some getting ready shots, throughout the ceremony, group shots & bridal portraits and even a trip to Polperro!
Even if you don’t have a big budget for wedding photography I have something for everyone. My smaller packages mean you don’t have to compromise on quality.Β Click the button below to find out more about what I offer:
