10 Tips for Camera Shy Couples

From a Cornwall Wedding Photographer

If the thought of having your photo taken on your wedding day fills you with dread, you’re not alone! So many couples I work with tell me they’re camera shy or “not photogenic” (which, by the way, is never true!). But wedding photography doesn’t have to feel awkward or forced. My approach is all about capturing natural, joyful moments without making you feel like you’re on a photoshoot.

If you’re worried about feeling awkward in front of the camera, here are my top 10 tips to help you feel relaxed and confident.

1. Choose a Photographer You Trust

Your photographer should feel like a friend—someone you feel comfortable around and can trust to capture you at your best. Take time to chat with potential photographers, look through their work, and choose someone whose vibe matches yours.

2. Have an Engagement Shoot

An engagement shoot is a game-changer for nervous couples! It gives you a chance to get used to being photographed in a relaxed setting. Plus, you’ll see how natural the photos turn out, which will make you feel more confident on the big day.

3. Keep Moving

Standing still and staring into a camera can feel awkward, so don’t! Walking hand in hand, twirling, hugging, or even having a little dance can help you feel more at ease. I love to give subtle prompts that encourage movement, which always results in beautiful, natural shots.

4. Focus on Each Other, Not the Camera

Forget about the lens and focus on your partner instead. Chat, laugh, whisper something silly—it’ll help create genuine, relaxed moments. The best photos come from real connection, not from stiff posing.

5. Bring Your Dog Along!

If you have a furry friend, why not include them in your photos? Dogs are brilliant at helping couples relax in front of the camera—stroking them, playing, or even just laughing at their antics makes for the most natural shots. Plus, they’re part of the family, so it’s only right they get to be part of your wedding story too!

6. Choose a Location That Feels Comfortable

If you’re worried about feeling awkward, picking a familiar or meaningful setting can help. Whether it’s a favourite beach, woodland, or even your own home, being in a space you love will help you relax and enjoy the experience. I’ve got plenty of favourite spots I can recommend if you don’t know the area – we’re spoiled for choice in this beautiful part of the world!

7. Embrace the Elements

Wind in your hair, the golden glow of the sun, or even a bit of Cornish drizzle—embracing the weather can add so much magic to your photos! Some of the best images come from those unscripted moments where nature plays its part. Whether it’s a dramatic windswept shot on the cliffs or a romantic rain-soaked kiss, going with the flow always leads to stunning, authentic images.

8. Wear Something That Feels Like You

Feeling comfortable in what you’re wearing can make a huge difference. For an engagement shoot, opt for neutral tones and clothes you feel good in. On your wedding day, make sure your dress, suit, or outfit feels like you—confidence always looks amazing in photos!

9. Let Go of Perfection

The most beautiful photos aren’t about looking perfect—they’re about feeling something. A little wind in your hair, a natural laugh, or a spontaneous moment between you both will tell a more powerful story than a forced pose ever could.

10. Trust Your Photographer & Enjoy the Moment

The best thing you can do? Relax and enjoy the day! Let your photographer worry about the details while you soak up every moment. Wedding photography isn’t about looking a certain way—it’s about capturing the love, joy, and emotion of the day.
